Vatican calls off plans to send envoy to Syria

The Vatican has dropped plans to send a mission to Syria and instead is sending a delegation to neighboring Lebanon to coordinate relief efforts for Syrian refugees and those needing help inside the country.

Pope Benedict XVI made the announcement during his public audience Wednesday, saying "unfortunately, due to a variety of circumstances and developments, it was not possible to carry out this initiative as planned."

Cardinal Robert Sarah, who heads a Vatican-based charity, will lead the mission. He plans to meet Friday with Catholic agencies in Beirut. Bishops have already raised $1 million.

Benedict appealed again to all parties in Syria to spare no efforts in the search for peace.
