UN recognizes improved Iraq-Kuwait relations

The UN Security Council has voted unanimously to ease some measures imposed in the wake of Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait recognizing the improved relationship between the two countries.

The UN imposed sanctions against Iraq after Saddam Hussein's forces invaded Kuwait. A US-led force drove his army out of Kuwait in the 1991 Gulf War.

Iraq's outstanding issues with Kuwait include accounting for missing Kuwaitis, returning missing property and archives, as well as reparations for the invasion.

The resolution adopted Thursday calls on the Iraqi government to continue searching for the missing Kuwaitis and looted property but no longer allows for the measures to be enforced militarily.

Iraq has been pressing for the council to end all sanctions and cancel dozens of war-related resolutions.
