Berri: Lebanese oil issue first item to be discussed with UN chief

House Speaker Nabih Berri said that the Lebanese oil issue and the maritime borders are the first item that will be discussed with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon. He added that studies prove the existence of large quantities of oil and gas in the territorial waters off the coast of Greater Beirut from Damour to Amchit.         

Berri told a delegation from the Lebanese Press Federation headed by Mohammad Baalbaki that Lebanon must disassociate itself from the events in the region to avoid repercussions. He voiced his fear of the establishment of regimes that give few freedoms and do not threaten Israel and its security. Berri said that the success of the Arab initiative in Syria will serve the interest of all parties.        

Berri said that the abolition of confessionalism is no more a Lebanese request, but an Arab request mainly because Arabism is in danger.          

On another note, Berri stressed the importance of implementing the principle of relativity in the expanded circumscriptions for it mitigates confessionalism and sectarianism, confirms national cohesion and the Lebanese need for each other and achieves the best representation.          

Berri said that having a magnetic electoral card is very important to control and decrease electoral spending, guarantee the freedom of both the voter and the candidate and allow the participation of Lebanese expatriates in the Lebanese electoral process.        

Berri stressed on the importance of women being represented in line with their statute and role in the society.
