Mikati from Paris: Lebanon's stability comes first

PM Najib Mikati declared that only peace in the Middle East can bring forth stability as he explained Friday to the French President Lebanon's reasons for keeping neutral towards developments in the Arab region, while he asked the French State's aid for Lebanese army.

PM Najib Mikati, currently on a visit to France, also met with his French counterpart Francois Fillon and Head of the French Senate Jean-Pierre Bel in presence of French ambassador to Lebanon, and Lebanese ambassador to France, along with Central Bank Governor Riyad Salameh.

The meeting with Nicholas Sarkozy, described as "very good" by Mikati, ended with the French President recognizing Lebanon's critical geo-political situation within the Middle East and among Arab countries.

"France is ready to give all the support Lebanon needs economically and technically," said the President. Mikati told reporters following the meeting that he asked Sarkozy to press Israel to stop its breaches of Lebanon's sovereignty, along with its espionage work against the country.

"What is critical for me is Lebanon's stability, and I have asked the President to support this Lebanese stance." Within the same framework, Mikati asked for further support and aid for the Lebanese army.

The Premier also called for a solution to the Palestinian cause based on Arab peace initiative launched in Beirut in 2002. "Without peace, there will never be stability in the region."
