Ghalyoun invade Lebanese waters, fishermen concerned

A number of fishermen in Sidon were surprised to find their nets filled with fish never before seen in Lebanese waters.

Fisherman Hassan Hajjo said that he was caught off guard when he found such a large quantity of bizarre fish invading Sidon’s shores, especially after the storm that struck Lebanon last week.

“Perhaps these fish have lost their way in the midst of the storm. They are long, slender and up to two meters long. They are called Al Ghalyoun [pipe] or Al Sayf [sword]. They may have come from the red sea through the Suez Canal”, Hajjo said.

Hajjo added that these fish are strong, deadly and capable of cutting through fishermen’s nets. The fisherman also added that poisonous puffer fish were also found in the same waters and caused significant damage to nets and negatively impacted native species of fish.
