Jumblatt: Time to break the misconception that Hafez Assad is an inspiring leader
National Struggle Front leader MP Walid Jumblatt said on Monday that some western powers don’t want to bring down the Assad regime because they have grown accustomed to it, adding that the Syrian regime is the one that protects Israel’s northern border in the Golan the most.

“A dirty game is being played against the Syrian people; a five decade long game in which the Syrian regime served the West,” Jumblatt told France 24.

“There is no fundamental dispute between the Syrian regime and Israel, when they used to engage in skirmishes, it would happen on Lebanese territory. Since 1973, the Golan front has not taken action and sometimes wars take place in Lebanon.”

In his weekly statement to Al Anbaa newspaper, Jumblatt said that it is high time to break the misconception that Hafez Assad is an inspiring leader. He said that this myth is similar to the authoritarian regime in Iraq whose hero was Saddam Hussein.
