General Karam greeted in Zgharta with fireworks, protest held outside military court

Shortly after his release from prison, retired General Fayez Karam visited Rabieh where he met with General Michel Aoun away from media coverage. He headed later for his hometown of Zgharta where a reception party complete with FPM supporters was awaiting him. Upon his arrival, he was greeted with fireworks, rice, and drums.

Karam was released on Tuesday afternoon after completing his prison sentence for collaborating with Israel.

His defense attorney Rachid Salameh earlier explained to LBCI that Karam, who was sentenced for spying for Israel, has benefited from the recent law enacted by the parliament, reducing the one-year prison term.

Karam was sentenced to two years in prison but with the issuance of the new law, his sentence was reduced to 18 months while Karam has already served 20 months, Salameh confirmed.

While festivities were organized to celebrate General Karam’s release, a protest was held outside the Military Court to condemn his release. Activists raised banners refusing espionage becoming a point of view.

Since the announcement of Fayez Karam’s release, ironic comments and pictures spread on Facebook criticizing the short period of time the retired general spent in prison despite the evidence proving his dealings with Israel.
