Two schoolgirls from a West Bank secondary school are getting ready to compete in an international science competition after being nominated for their 'smart cane' invention.
It's a walking aid equipped with sensors, which allow it to 'speak' to the user through headphones, warning them of obstacles in their path.
The schoolgirls said the piece of technology can be fitted to a regular walking stick to make it a 'smart' one, giving it the capability to warn users of a range of objects, from walls to puddles, and whether the ground ahead is uneven.
It also lights up in the dark, so that people around the user can locate him or her.
The project, which was funded by the students' school in Jericho, took five months to complete.
The team won second place in the Palestine Science and Technology Fair before being nominated for the international competition.
They are due to travel to the United States with their teacher and supervisor to participate in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) in May.
