No Muslim family should engage in birth control or family planning, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday, calling pious Muslims to have more children.
“We will multiply our descendants. They talk about population planning, birth control. No Muslim family can have such an approach,” he said in a speech in Istanbul broadcast live on television.
Erdogan wants Turkey, a mostly Muslim nation of around 75 million people, to be among the world's top 10 economies by 2023. A religious and social conservative, he has for years advocated families having at least three children.
