Egypt's military renews pledge to step down
A senior member of Egypt's ruling military council says it remains committed to handing over power to a civilian administration by July 1.

The announcement was made a day after deadly clashes between protesters and assailants left at least 11 dead in Cairo.

Maj. Gen. Mohammed al-Asar also told a news conference on Thursday that the military guarantees the integrity and fairness of presidential elections scheduled for May 23-24.

Al-Asar's comments appear to address charges by politicians that the military plans to use the clashes as a pretext to ignore the July 1 deadline.

The military council took over after authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak was ousted in a popular uprising last year.
