REPORT: Former Speaker al-Husseini says new law includes barriers deemed crimes against national unity

Former Speaker Hussein al-Husseini rejected the barriers presented by the new electoral law, noting that not only are they inapplicable, but also represent qualified crimes against national unity.

Al-Husseini considers dividing Beirut into western and eastern districts is a crime against the nation.

He also said that the law legalizes bribery by adding a paragraph to the article 62, whereby it does not prohibit offers and assistance presented by candidates and not subjecting the payments offered during the electoral campaign to any ceiling.

The former speaker also pointed out many obstacles in the new law, stating that while it is called proportionality law, it is nothing than a forgery for the elections before it happens.

“It was passed as a pretext to extend the term of the parliament to wait for the regional developments to progress,” he noted.
