The Tripoli’s landfill dates back more than 25 years and has reached its maximum capacity in 2010, but continues to receive 450 tons of garbage on a daily basis from the Federation of al-Fayhaa Municipalities, which comprises Tripoli, al-Mina, al-Baddawi and al-Qalamoun.
The landfill is one ticking time bomb in Tripoli and the second is the waste sorting plant right next to the landfill, the smells of which have taken over the city.
The said plant, founded by the ministry of development for administrative affairs in cooperation with the European Union and the Federation of al-Fayhaa Municipalities failed in covering its duties due to extreme mismanagement.
The municipality decided to close the plant and establish a new landfill.
However, closing the facility will result in a grave environmental crisis, with a possibility of piles garbage filling the streets, since it used to treat 30% of the federation’s waste. It will also result in a social crisis since its closure will deprive 62 families from Bab al-Tebbaneh from their jobs.
