Sleiman: A challenge does not suspend elections’ results

President of the Constitutional Council Issam Sleiman declared that the council received 17 challenge petitions against the recent parliamentary elections, explaining that the challenge does not suspend the polls’ results and that the elected candidate is considered a deputy once the results are issued.

In a press conference, Sleiman stressed that the Constitutional Council will deal with the challenges with utmost seriousness and responsibility, noting that he is waiting for the report of the elections supervisory committee to be issued so that they will be able to expand their investigations in order to verify the information and the violations.

Answering a question about the mechanism to be adopted in case a deputy’s election is cancelled, Sleiman stated that in case the election of one deputy is cancelled, the re-election will be held based on the majority system, pointing out that in the elections of 2 or more deputies is cancelled, the re-election will be held based on the proportionality system.
