Hamas temporarily suspends voter registration in Gaza
Hamas announced on Monday the suspension of the works of the Central Elections Commission in Gaza strip, on the eve of the modernization of the voters’ record scheduled for Tuesday. This is considered as an indispensable step to hold the elections set forth in the National Reconciliation’s agreement.

The spokesperson for Hamas Sami Abou Zuhri said in a statement that the Movement has decided to suspend registrations temporarily until concerned parties reach a consensus. “This would abolish all obstacles impeding this process and create the needed atmosphere to ensure that the registration process goes peacefully and equally in Gaza, the West Bank and other regions.

Abou Zuhri said that ongoing violations in the West Bank are preventing many of the Hamas Movement’s partisans from registering for elections. The security crackdown, prosecution and the lack of normal circumstances prevented the Movement from playing its role as an observer during the registration process.
