The Transportation Drivers Unions staged Wednesday a peaceful strike, where trucks gathered in the region of Dora at 6:00 am, in the presence of head of the Truck Owners' Union Shafiq al-Qassis, who stressed that the movement is peaceful and it comes in an effort to urge the officials to fulfill the promises made to the unions and the implementation of which only requires to abide by the laws and rules.
Al-Qassiss also stresses the need to meet the demands of the land transportation sector, since it is essential for the economic cycle, noting that “today’s participation is symbolic and does not affect traffic.”
He hoped that the officials do not force them to escalate their movements.
Taxi cabs also gathered near the pedestrian bridge in Dora area in the presence of head of the Public Transportation Drivers Union Marwan Fayyad, who pointed out that “today’s strike is peaceful, symbolic and civil,” adding that the drivers are committing to the decisions issued by the transportation unions in order to achieve the neglected demands.”
Fayyad urged the politicians to work on resolving the issues of the land transportation sector, which plays a major role in the economy; stressing that they will resort to escalation should the officials fail to fulfill their vows.
Owners of fuel tanks also took part in the strike and gathered in Dora, in the presence of the head of the Fuel Tanks Owners Union Ibrahim al-Sarini, who stated that this movement is symbolic and aims at warning the officials against neglecting the demands of the transportation sector.
For their part, owners of public trucks at Beirut port suspended work for a period of one hour, from 9:00 am until 10:00 am.
