Over 107 killed in Iraq bombings

An onslaught of bombings and shootings killed dozens across Iraq on Sunday and Monday, officials said.          

In Taji, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of Baghdad, bombings killed 28 people on Monday in the worst attack of the day. Police said bombs planted in around five houses in the Sunni town exploded an hour after dawn, killing 17.     

Police who rushed to the scene to help were hit by a suicide bomber in the crowd, killing another 11.      

Monday's violence in 12 Iraqi cities and towns appeared coordinated.   

The blasts all took place within a few hours of each other.    

Monday was the nation's deadliest day so far this year with 93 killed in the attacks.        

In Mahmoudiyah, south of Baghdad, two car bombs exploded killing 12 people on Sunday, including two policemen, and injuring 36, officials said.        

A car exploded around 7 pm local time (1600 GMT) in a parking lot for minibuses in the town, about 20 miles (30 kilometers) south of Baghdad.       

As emergency responders sprang into action, a second car blew up, according to police at the scene.         

A medic at Mahmoudiyah public hospital confirmed the casualty toll.       

The attacks come days after the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq warned in a statement that the militant group is reorganizing in areas from which it retreated before US troops left the country last December.
