Minister al-Hassan: Our government is adamant on implementing a series of reforms
Minister of Interior Raya al-Hassan said on Tuesday that the current government is adamant on implementing a series of reforms that “do not  aim at only reviving Lebanon’s economy but also to fortify it and to provide it with the necessary stability and durable flexibility."
The minister’s comments were made during the Regional Conference on Urban Flexibility in the Middle East and North Africa, whereby she noted that Lebanon “is fully aware of its need to improve the resilience of its towns and cities.”
“Lebanon is committed since 2008 to the International agenda for disaster risk reduction," al-Hassan added.
She also stressed that the urban flexibility strategy has been prepared with the Municipality of Beirut, adding however that ‘it must be translated into action plans to build an institutional capacity, to use resources and to prioritize investments.”
"The chaotic expansion towards the Lebanese coastal cities is linked to a lack of urban planning,” she added.
Al-Hassan also said that these cities suffer from a severe shortage of infrastructure and urban services, adding that the situation has been worsened since 2012 with the influx of large numbers of Syrian refugees, which added more pressure on the country at the social, developmental, economic and environmental levels.
