Mikati: early judgments on electoral draft law regrettable

PM Najib Mikati praised on Wednesday the approval of the electoral draft law in Tuesday’s cabinet session, adding that it has now been referred to Parliament for discussion and possible ratification. He noted that the cabinet considers that this draft law represents the majority of political positions, adding that cabinet is ready to approve any formula or modifications agreed upon in parliament.

At the beginning of the cabinet session convened at the Grand Serail Wednesday, Mikati noted that hasty remarks made on the electoral draft law must be constructive towards the democratic process in order to hold peaceful elections and ensure the widest participation.

Mikati expressed regret toward early judgments, noting that the current stage requires openness to reach a law that secures calm elections.
Mikati stressed that the government did not neglect the case of the 11 Lebanese hostages in Syria, noting that this issue will be followed-up.

In turn, Social Affairs Minister Wael Abou Faour said that the appointments item was not discussed in the cabinet session. He quoted Mikati as saying that the pay scale draft law will be ready and referred to the cabinet as soon as possible.
