Lebanese prisoners seize 10 guards in Roumieh jail riot

Riots broke out in Roumieh Prison - B complex on Saturday as inmates burnt mattresses and set fire inside prison cells demanding the approval of the amnesty law. Prisoners also hindered door-locks to their cells, preventing security guards from entering. Gunshot fire was reportedly heard around the vicinity of the complex.

Inmates managed to hold 10 ISF members hostage in the prison’s B complex before releasing them later on.

Riots break out frequently in Lebanon's overcrowded Roumieh Prison, built for 1,500 inmates but housing more than 3,000. Many say they are political prisoners and should be released.

A source, requesting anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to media, said prisoners had timed the riot to coincide with Pope Benedict's three-day visit to Beirut to draw attention to their demands.

"These types of problems happen often; it's not a big deal. But they know the timing for a riot was good," he said.
