Ibrahimi’s convoy stoned in Jordan while clashes rock Aleppo

The convoy of international envoy to Syria Akhdar Ibrahimi was stoned on Tuesday upon leaving the Zaatari refugee camp located in northern Jordan where he checked up on Syrian refugees.     

A security source told AFP that the demonstration was held in protest of Ibrahimi’s meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad and the fact that he gave his regime a chance to continue its bloody crackdown. Ibrahimi had announced from the camp that the situation in Syria is very bad and “is heading towards further deterioration”.  

Before heading to Jordan, Ibrahimi had checked on the Syrian refugees in a camp in southern Turkey. Following his meeting with Turkish officials, he hoped that refugees will be able to go back to their countries shortly.     

In the context of a comprehensive political dialogue, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will be partaking in serious talks on Syria with his European counterparts before their meeting in Luxembourg in October, according to European diplomatic sources.       

From Cairo and following his meeting with President Mohammad Mursi and Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammad Kamel Amro, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius warned of the crisis’ extension to Lebanon, adding “this is what Syria wants, but the Lebanese strongly refuse”. Fabius said that the situation in Syris is extremely dangerous and might turn into “a regional crisis with international repercussions”. For his part, the Egyptian foreign minister stressed that if the situation in Syria continues to deteriorate, the entire region will pay the price.      

Foreign ministers from Turkey, Egypt and Iran had their first high-level meeting in Cairo on Monday, as part of a newly-formed quartet charged with seeking an end to Syria's civil war.      

During the meeting, Iran suggested that Egypt, Turkey and Saudi Arabia send observers to Syria to help put an end to violence. Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said that all the participants stressed the necessity to reach a peaceful solution, especially the influent countries in the region such as Egypt, Turkey, Iran and Saudi Arabia.     


On the field:  

On the field, fierce clashes erupted on Tuesday in the Aleppo’s neighborhoods controlled by opposition fighters, AFP quoted the city’s residents as saying.    

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that Damascus Reef, Homs and Deir al-Zour were shelled.     

In contrast, Syrian security forces confirmed that they took control of the Midan neighborhood and advised citizens to avoid some parts of the neighborhood where snipers are holed up.      

For its part, SANA reported that pro-regime troops are still "cleansing" several neighborhoods in Aleppo from armed terrorist groups, adding that they clashed with a terrorist gang in Al Hajar Al Aswad neighborhood, killing a number of its members. The army also foiled infiltration attempts from Lebanon to Tall Kalakh Reef in Homs.      

Separately, SANA said that the Syrian government will not be able to send Syrians to perform the annual Muslim hajj pilgrimage in Mecca this year, due to the absence of an agreement with Riyadh.
