Davutoglu: “We lost a close friend”

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Sunday that Turkey lost a “close friend” referring to the killing of Lebanese intelligence chief Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan in a car bomb attack on Friday.

“We lost a friend in this attack. Al-Hassan was a close friend of Turkey. He tried hard to help our two kidnapped citizens in Lebanon," Milliyet's Turkish newspaper quoted Davutoglu as saying.

The Turkish FM said the killing of al-Hassan was a critical development in Lebanon similar to that of 2005 when former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was assassinated, expressing fears that the incident would deepen sectarian rifts in Lebanon.

Davutoglu noted that he spoke to Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and former Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri following Friday's attack.
