REPORT: Collective rape victim dies in Singapore hospital

The body of the young Indian woman who died after being gang raped and beaten on a bus in New Delhi nearly two weeks ago was taken to an undertakers in Singapore to be prepared to be flown back to India later on Saturday.

The 23-year old victim, who has not been identified, passed away early on Saturday at Mount Elizabeth hospital in Singapore with her family and officials of the Indian Embassy by her side, a hospital spokesperson said.

After 10 days at a hospital in New Delhi the woman was brought on Thursday to Mount Elizabeth, which specializes in multi-organ transplants.

A hospital official said the woman - who had suffered from a heart attack while in hospital in New Delhi - had been in extremely critical condition since then, and by late on Friday her condition had taken a turn for the worse, with her vital signs deteriorating.

Indian police on Saturday charged six men with murder and a police spokesman said the six faced the death penalty if convicted.

The frightening nature of the crime shocked Indians, who have come out in the thousands for almost daily demonstrations, calling for greater protection for women from sexual violence.

As news of the victim's death reached New Delhi early Saturday, hundreds of policemen sealed off the high-security India Gate area, where the seat of India's government is located, in anticipation of more protests.
