REPORT: Higher Islamic Council elections are drawing near amid ongoing crisis

The elections of the Higher Islamic Council are expected to take place on the 14th of April, while the dispute is still ongoing between the members of the council and Dar al-Fatwa.

The dispute resulted from a growing tension in the relations between Mufti Mohammad Rashid Qabbani, Prime Minister Najib Mikati and former PM Saad Hariri.

According to Sheikh Hisham Khalifa, the general-director of Islamic Endowments, the elections are expected to solve this dispute.

In this context, Khalifa told LBCI that the objections to the elections are related to the voters’ lists.

On the other hand, the opponents of Mufti Qabbani criticize him for not consulting anyone before calling for the elections, adding that he appointed dozens of employees as participants in the electorate, selected a group of local Muftis and agreed with a number of Imams.
