Court extends order that Italy envoy stay in India

The Supreme Court has indefinitely extended its order that Italy's ambassador stay in India because two Italian marines are refusing to return for a trial over the killing of two fishermen.

The court had allowed the marines to return to Italy in February to vote in the national elections and to celebrate Easter. Ambassador Daniele Mancini made a written promise the men would return, but Italy said last week they will not.

The court in return barred Manicini from leaving India and asked him to explain his position by Monday.

Mancini said his undertaking represented his government's position, which had changed. The next court hearing is set for April 2.

The marines were guarding a cargo ship and allegedly shot the Indian fishermen after mistaking them for pirates.
