MP Kabbara: Lebanese state should prove commitment to Tripoli's safety

Future bloc MP Mohammad Kabbara urged Thursday the army and the Lebanese state to prove their "devotion to preserving Tripoli's safety.

Following a meeting for the National Islamic Gathering at his Tripoli home, Kabbara said the Gathering is willing to supervise the full implementation of the LAF security plan, especially the violations carried out by armed groups in Jabal Mohsen.

MP Kabbara called on Tripoli's residents not to allow anyone to stir up chaos in the city, urging the LAF to adopt "fair measures."

Earlier, State Prosecutor Judge Hatem Madi issued a request to caretaker Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi, asking him to refer to the Parliament, a letter sent by President Michel Sleiman whereby he demanded lifting the immunity of MP Mohammad Abdel Latif Kabbara.

In this context, MP Kabbara expressed awe via LBCI in regards to President Sleiman's failure to demand from the General Prosecution to take legal action against those who are shelling Tripoli and threatening its security.

President Sleiman asked on Wednesday 5th of June the General Prosecution to file a lawsuit against MP Mohammad Kabbara for saying that the President conspired with foreign countries to provoke events in Tripoli.

On Tuesday the 4th of June 2013, MP Kabbara accused President Michel Sleiman and Lebanese Armed Forces Commander Jean Kahwagi of complying against Tripoli's security.

Clashes erupted in Tripoli on Sunday the 19th of May between pro-Syrian regime supporters in the predominantly Alawite neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen and pro-revolution fighters in the Sunni Bab al-Tabbaneh leaving at least 35 persons killed, including 3 LAF members, and more than 300 others wounded.

Violence between the two areas stretches back to decades, but the recent round of fighting was the heaviest.

On Sunday the 26th of May, clashes eased significantly, while sporadic gunshots were still heard occasionally as Lebanese Armed Forces deployed in al-Kobbeh and Rifa regions, and headed towards Syria Street.
