Australia officially recognizes a Palestinian state and says Hamas should not play a role

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Sunday that his country has officially recognized a Palestinian state.

Albanese stated in a joint statement with Foreign Minister Penny Wong that Australia, alongside Canada and the United Kingdom, recognizes Palestine as part of an effort to revive momentum for a two-state solution, starting with a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages held there.

The statement added that Hamas should not have any role in Palestine.
