REPORT: Cautious calm prevails over the city of Sidon

Cautious calm prevailed on Wednesday over the southern city of Sidon following yesterday’s clashes that took place in Abra, killing one citizen and leaving many others injured.

In this regard, the political official of Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya in the South Bassam Hammoud denounced the security incidents that occurred yesterday in Sidon, and slammed the presence of gunmen as well as the use of heavy weapons.

Hammoud also pointed out that the security forces should assume their responsibilities in maintaining security in Sidon, calling on the Lebanese State to protect its citizens.

Earlier, the Sub-Security Council of Sidon convened to discuss Tuesday's security incidents in the southern city.

Separately, the Secretary General of the Popular Nasserite Organization Osama Saad held a press conference in which he said that yesterday's incidents pose a great threat on civil peace.

He also slammed the "permanent violations" of supporters of Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir in the city, adding that such acts aim to provoke Hezbollah to react.

Saad hailed the stances adopted by the Palestinians factions in Ain el-Helwe camp who had decided to keep a distance from the clashes in the city.

He also noted that members of the Future movement partook in Tuesday's incidents, calling on the security and military apparatuses to assume their national responsibilities in this regard.

Heavy clashes erupted Tuesday [18 June] between unknown gunmen and followers of a radical Sunni cleric Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir in south Lebanon, security officials said, killing one person in the latest apparent outbreak of violence between Lebanese factions supporting opposing sides in the civil war in neighboring Syria.
