GCC states supervise Hezbollah's financial transactions in Gulf region

A Bahraini official announced on Thursday during a meeting for Gulf officials in the Saudi capital Riyadh that the Gulf Cooperation Council states (GCC) set a mechanism to supervise the economic and financial transactions of Hezbollah.

The Kingdom of Bahrain's Interior Ministry Undersecretary, Major General Khalid bin Salim Al-Absi asserted that the meeting is dedicated to put a mechanism to supervise Hezbollah's financial transaction in the Gulf states.

GCC states had declared last month that they will adopt procedures against partisans of Hezbollah following the party's participation in the fighting taking place in Syria.

Syria's conflict began in March 2011 with largely peaceful protests against Syrian President Bachar Assad's rule but escalated into a civil war in response to a brutal government crackdown.

The conflict has since taken an increasingly sectarian bent, with mostly-Sunni rebels assisted by foreign fighters.

Assad's forces are bolstered by fighters of the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah.

Hezbollah fighters helped the Syrian army capture a key town near Lebanon's border last month, dealing a blow to opposition fighters who have been ferrying supplies and fighters over the border.
