Locusts spotted in Lebanon’s Akkar plain

Farmers in the region of Akkar and its surroundings reported spotting a number of locusts that are said to be the result of the hot weather currently prevailing over the country, expressing concern that these few insects may bring about a new plague of locusts. The farmers stressed that they are no longer able to bear the burden of the successive disasters that hit their agricultural products.

Last year Lebanon experienced the worst locust plague to hit the country for decades. The locusts were said to have come from Africa and were spotted throughout several Lebanese areas sparking fears of heavy agricultural damage.

Accordingly the Ministry of Agriculture took up several measures and tasked the concerned departments to follow up on the issue.

Eventually a wave of cool weather killed off the remaining locusts that had not been killed by pesticides and other chemicals.
