Grand Mufti Qabbani says Lebanon inching closer to darker path

Grand Mufti Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani said on Monday that the world’s super powers are adamant on dragging Lebanon toward further infighting, noting that those who are behind the Roueis explosion are also responsible for Tripoli’s twin blasts.

“Lebanon is inching closer towards a darker path,” the Grand Mufti said in a speech he delivered at Dar al-Fatwa in Tripoli.

Separately, Mufti Qabbani called on Prime Minister-Designate Tammam Salam to expedite the formation of a government of national unity, slamming the “provocative” statements of the March 8 and March 14 coalitions.

Mufti Qabbani then headed to the Beirut Southern Suburbs’ region of Roueis and lashed out at the politicians’ statements that “are behind the killing of the Lebanese people”.

“The explosions aim at fomenting sedition in order to create havoc in Lebanon,” Mufti Qabbani added.

Grand Mufti Qabbani also stressed the need to cooperate with the Christian parties "since they are also targeted".

On Friday the 23rd of August, two explosions rocked the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli near the al-Taqwa and al-Salam mosques, leaving 45 killed and almost 500 others injured.

In mid-August, a powerful car bomb tore through the Beirut Southern Suburbs' region of Roueis, a stronghold of Hezbollah, claiming the lives of 27 civilians and leaving more than 289 wounded, some of whom are still receiving treatment.
