Cardinal Rai says Roueis explosion, Tripoli’s blasts target entire country

Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Beshara Rai condemned on Monday the explosion that rocked the Beirut Southern Suburbs’ region of Roueis and the twin blasts that hit Lebanon’s northern city of Tripoli, noting that they have targeted the entire country.

Cardinal Rai also lashed out at the Lebanese politicians, noting that “the Roueis explosion and Tripoli’s blasts could have been avoided had the politicians reached consensus”.

On another note, Rai pointed out that “all the Lebanese people are paying the price of deep divisions and economic woes,” prompting them to emigrate.

In turn, the Deputy Head of the Islamic Shiite Supreme Council, Sheikh Abdul Amir Qabalan voiced solidarity with the residents of Tripoli, offering his condolences to the families of the victims.

“We are ready to do our utmost in order to preserve Lebanon’s unity and coexistence,” Sheikh Qabalan added.

On Friday the 23rd of August, two explosions rocked the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli near the al-Taqwa and al-Salam mosques, leaving 45 killed and almost 500 others injured.

In mid-August, a powerful car bomb tore through the Beirut Southern Suburbs' region of Roueis, a stronghold of Hezbollah, claiming the lives of 27 civilians and leaving more than 289 wounded, some of whom are still receiving treatment.
