US ambassador Hale: US remains committed to Lebanon’s peace and stability

Speaker Nabih Berri met on Thursday with US ambassador to Lebanon David Hale in Ain el-Tineh.

Following the meeting, Speaker Berri stressed the importance of exerting further diplomatic efforts to solve the Syrian crisis.

He also asserted the vitality of dialogue among Lebanese factions, urging for the swift formation of a new government.

For his part, Ambassador Hale confirmed to Speaker Berri the US' efforts to consolidate peace and stability in Lebanon.

He also noted that Syrian President Bachar Assad's regime acknowledged the possession of chemical weapons which “were used against the Syrian people and will be used again if world powers stand idly by on Syria.”

The US accuses Assad's government of being behind the August attack, which the Obama administration says killed 1,429 people.

Other estimates of the deaths are lower.

Assad has denied responsibility and accuses the Obama administration of spreading lies without providing evidence.

Russia on Monday proposed that Syria place its chemical weapons under international control and eventually dismantle them to avert a U.S. strike, and Syria quickly accepted the proposal.
