MP Kabbara says Tripoli withstands dire security situation

Future Movement MP Mohammad Kabbara said on Tuesday "the Lebanese state is turning a blind eye to the assaults of Jabal Mohsen's gangs," noting that Tripoli is withstanding a dire security situation.

MP Kabbara said in a press conference that the northern city of Tripoli has overcome sedition while upholding coexistence and civil peace following the twin blasts that rocked the city.

Kabbara also held the Lebanese state responsible for Tripoli's incidents, noting that it did not implement "serious" initiative to address the security situation.

This comes as cautious calm prevailed over Tripoli's Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbaneh on Tuesday morning while sporadic gunshots and sniper fire were targeting houses on the international road linking Tripoli to Akkar, the state-run National News Agency reported.

Numerous residents, mainly in Tripoli's al-Baqqar Street and Syria Street, have fled the city following overnight clashes that left five people injured.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.
