Cautious calm prevails in Tripoli as death toll reaches 2

Cautious calm is prevailing on Sunday in Lebanon's northern city of Tripoli after two were killed by sniper fire and 5 others were wounded.          

The state-run National News Agency reported that Lebanese Armed Forces Units deployed in Tripoli's Jabal Mohsen, as part of the security plan to be implemented mainly in Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.

Clashes between both regions eased significantly on Sunday, while sporadic gunshots were still heard occasionally.

This as sniping operations resumed in Syria street, Al Barad, Al Beessar, Souk el Kamih, Bakkar, and Jabal Mohsen, killing citizens Moussa Ahmad al-Masri and Mouhie al-Din Abdel Latif in Jabal Mohsen.

Army and Internal Security Forces units continue to patrol the main roads in the city.

The clashes, which had erupted on Monday night, left several persons killed and dozens injured, while officials held several security meetings in order to find a solution for the situation.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.
