How has the Syrian crisis affected the Bekaa?

Al-Masnaa checkpoint is relatively calm these days; it actually reflects the Syrian political situation and the sanctions imposed on the regime, which clearly affected the transit, tourism and economic exchange between Lebanon and Syria.

The Shtora area is known for its normally busy market for people travelling between Lebanon and Syria; this market is been experiencing a serious problem in the last several months. All hotels and rest houses have also been affected by the crisis; less trips and tourists are leaving Beirut to Syria and only Syrian workers could be encountered at the border.

Official sources told LBCI that the number of tourist cars crossing into Syria reduced ten-fold, from 3000 cars to around 350 from October 2010 to October 2011.

Even transit trucks carrying goods have been reduced by 30% since last year the sources added, and it is expected that this number will keep growing if the Syrian crisis is not solved.
