PM-Designate Salam blames local, regional crises for failure to form new government

Prime Minister-Designate Tammam Salam declared Wednesday that the current political status quo in the country has brought about a sense of uneasiness for both him and for President Michel Sleiman, “because eight months have passed since his designation and the cabinet has not yet been formed.”

In this context, he called on the political forces to reach an agreement and to waive their preconditions in order to facilitate the formation, stressing that further delay will lead to escalation and will widen the the political gap.

Following his meeting with President Sleiman at the Baabda Presidential Palace, Salam pointed out that many difficulties and obstacles have prevented the formation of the said government due to several local and regional crises.

“The mission is difficult but I have the will to serve national interest and I am keen on preventing the country from being dragged into further deterioration,” Salam added, stressing that negative regional developments are delaying any progress.

On another note, Salam said he visited former PM Saad Hariri in Paris, where the latter expressed his support to the positions voiced by Salam and the March 14 forces, and which serve the country’s best interest.
