On the eve of the winter holidays, Lebanon will be hit with two strikes: The first, next Thursday; and the second will be held between Christmas and New Year on the 27th. The Trade Union Coordination Committee is organizing Thursday’s strike; the second one is set by the GLC.              

The timing of these strikes coincides with governmental holidays when amending anything that has been approved would prove difficult.  This was the message that PM Mikati conveyed to the Trade Union Coordination Committee.            

The week got off to a rough start, not only with the weighty trade union issue but also the security events in the south that seem to be progressively worsening. A rocket may have landed in a Lebanese village today, but it had little impact on fears of instability in a region rife with numerous missile attacks of unknown origins and anonymous IEDs lining the roads.            

Paris blamed Damascus and Hezbollah for the blast targeting the French patrol, drawing responses from both accused parties: Syria denied any involvement in the incident while Hezbollah was astonished by what it described as the “deplorable accusations” made by the French foreign minister, urging him to correct his position and pay heed to the seriousness of such accusations.             

In the political sphere, a watershed moment for Walid Jumblatt who saluted the Syrian people in Deraa, Al-Sanamayn and Homs saying, “shame on those who are reluctant and complicit, shame on them”.               

The release of kidnapped Ahmad Zeidan is still drawing attention two days on. After we reported the mysterious “release” of an unaccompanied Zeidan yesterday, today was marked by a deafening silence from the authorities as if their work was done. In fact, no prosecution or inquiries are pending- authorities closed the case playing by tribal rules. Herein lies the question: What role has Speaker Berri played in this settlement?
