Sleiman: The fight against terrorism is an international concern

President Michel Sleiman condemned Tuesday the attack that targeted Beirut’s Southern Suburb, noting that national unity can put an end to terrorism.

During his meeting with the Consular Corps, Sleiman stressed that the fight against terrorism and extremism has become an international concern, hoping that the Special Tribunal for Lebanon uncovers the “real criminals, in order to prove that no one can escape justice.”

Regarding the Baabda Declaration, Sleiman said that the declaration has been receiving the support of several Lebanese parties, and international bodies including the United Nations, the Security Council and regional and Arab organizations.

“In case any party considers the declaration unsuitable, it will soon discover that it is essential for Lebanon’s stability,” he stressed.

On another note, Sleiman said that the national defense strategy that was proposed during a national dialogue session has gained credibility after the United Nations deemed it valid for discussions, adding that the strategy focuses on bolstering the Lebanese Armed Forces in its fight against terrorism.

On the issue of the cabinet, the president said that positive and hopeful signs appeared in this regard after eliminating the “blocking third” possibility and focusing on the government’s priorities that include managing the citizens’ daily affairs, supporting the LAF, preparing for the elections and resuming work at the Parliament in order to pass a new electoral law.
