Caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs Adnan Mansour met on Friday with the Syrian ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdel Karim Ali.
Following the meeting, Ali asserted that Syrian President Bachar al-Assar garners the support of 60% of the Syrian people, adding that the Syrian delegation to the Geneva 2 conference submitted a "deep and justified vision" for the first article of Geneva 1's closing statement.
Syrian negotiators wrapped up on Friday a week of peace talks in Geneva the first round of what is expected to be prolonged negotiations stretching several weeks or even months trying to find a solution to the devastating civil war.
The conflict, which began as largely peaceful protests against the rule of President Bashar Assad, shifted into an armed insurgency and became a full-blown civil war that has killed more than 130,000 people and forced millions to flee their homes, including over 2 million who have mostly settled in neighboring countries. Syria's economy, meanwhile, lies in ruins as do many of the nation's cities, towns and villages.
Violence in Syria has also affected neighboring Lebanon with shelling reaching several Lebanese border towns throughout the conflict.
Asked about the Syrian shelling targeting Lebanese towns of Akkar, Ali answered by saying that "terrorist forces are violating Lebanon and Syria's sovereignty with the support and funding of foreign sources."
Shelling launched from the Syrian side toward various bordering Lebanese towns became very frequent since the uprising in neighboring Syria.
On Friday, one person was killed and eight others were injured when Syrian shelling targeted the border towns of Akkar.
The shelling left the homes of two citizens Nazir Saleh who lives in Mashta Hammoud, and Gerges al-Khoury of Shadra, severely damaged, but without casualties, the two said.
The shelling also targeted the towns of al-Abboudieh, Heker Jannin, al-Arama and Qoubour al-Bayd.
The residents of the border towns called on President Michel Sleiman, Lebanese Armed Forces Chief General Jean Qahwaji and all the concerned officials to interfere in order to put an end to these violations.
