Marshall Islands officially withdraws Jamil Sayyed’s UNESCO nomination

The authorities of the Marshall Islands declared that they officially withdrew the request to appoint Maj. Gen. Jamil Sayyed as its representative at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), stressing that they were not informed of the nomination that had not taken any official form.

Officials from the Archipelago said that they are probing into source of the request, adding that the governmental administrations, especially the justice and finance ministries, have not yet been informed of the nominations.

French magazine “Le Figaro” published an article on Monday February 10, titled “Lebanese spy embarrasses the UNESCO” (Un espion libanais embarrasse l'Unesco), whereby it said that Maj. Gen. Jamil al-Sayyed will become the representative of the Marshall Islands at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). 

The article noted that naming al-Sayyed for this position aims at granting him immunity to protect him from any potential legal prosecution by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, pointing out that the UNESCO cannot reject his nomination.
