President Sleiman says policy statement should not be hurdled by one sentence

The Lebanese cabinet is currently holding a session at the Baabda Palace to discuss formulas for the policy statement.

The ministers are currently discussing a formula suggested by Minister Ali Hassan Khalil.

This as President Michel Sleiman hoped that the policy statement would be finalized today, noting that the cabinet should follow up on developments as the international community is ready to assist Lebanon.

"It is unacceptable that one sentence hurdles the finalization of the policy statement," Sleiman said during Thursday's cabinet session.

Health Minister Wael Abou Faour stressed, in a phone call with LBCI prior to the session, that "last-minute efforts are being exerted to rescue the policy statement and the cabinet".

Ministerial sources also told LBCI that one of the formulas was previously submitted by Abou Faour, noting that it stipulates that the state must defend Lebanon and its citizens and the Lebanese have the right to resist the Israeli occupation while preserving Lebanon's sovereignty.
For his part, Finance Minister Ali Hassan Khalil said, ahead of the session, that Speaker Nabih Berri is exerting efforts to reach an agreement over the policy statement.
