Cardinal Rai voices rejection to potential presidential void

Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Bshara Boutros Rai reiterated on Monday his call for a session to elect a new president as soon as the legislative assemblies end.

He also voiced his rejection to a potential vacuum, and said: "This would pose a great threat to Lebanon and its citizens".

"We need the new president to be strong in his morals ... and his impartiality," Cardinal Rai said on Monday before leaving Beirut towards Geneva on a five-day official trip.

The patriarch is expected during his trip to give a lecture, and meet with U.N. peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi and Lebanese community members in Geneva.
