MP Aoun: Deputies still recall Lebanon’s past events

Change and Reform Bloc leader MP Michel Aoun stated on Wednesday that he, along with the deputies of the bloc left the chamber of parliament at the end of the first round to elect a new president since it became clear that there would be no consensus over one particular candidate.

Aoun said “the fact that some deputies voted in favor of Lebanese victims is proof that they still recall Lebanon’s past events and history,” he said in reference to ballots naming late Jihane Tony Franjieh, Dany Chamoun, Tarek Dany Chamoun, Rashid Karameh, and Elias Zayek as potential candidates.

The Lebanese parliament convened on Wednesday to elect a new president; however, failed to do so in the first round of voting.

During the session 48 deputies voted in favor of Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea, 16 MPs endorsed candidate Henry Helou, 52 casted blank voting slips, 1 deputy voted for Kataeb leader Amin Gemayel and 7 votes were annulled.
