REPORT: Firefighters struggle to put out wildfire in Baabda, army evacuates citizens

A wildfire driven by hot winds in the Baabda district threatened residential areas on Monday as firefighters struggled to extinguish the flames.

The blaze, which erupted in Betshai's forest area, left thick black smoke in its wake.

Civil Defense fire trucks and three army helicopter were rushed to the scene while members of the Lebanese Armed Forces worked on evacuating residents who were stranded in their homes.

Beirut Fire Brigade units also headed to Betshai in a bid to assist Civil Defense teams.

Betshai's mayor Michel Khoury said, in a phone call with LBCI, that the wind-driven wildfire erupted at 6 am, noting that the fire has so far damaged approximately 10 km of forest land.

Almost 100 homes were evacuated, he added, stressing that no casualties were reported.

For his part, Change and Reform bloc MP Alain Aoun described today's incident as a disaster, noting that he is exerting tireless efforts to facilitate the work of firefighters.

In turn, the Director General of the Civil Defense Brigadier General Raymond Khattar said fire trucks were brought from several Civil Defense centers, adding that the blaze was partly contained.
