Lebanese cabinet holds regular session at Grand Serail

The Lebanese cabinet held on Thursday a regular session at the Grand Serail under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Tammam Salam and in the presence of all ministers.

Prime Minister Salam said, during the cabinet session, that all political forces should exert tireless efforts to elect a new president and veer off the possibility of a power vacuum the soonest possible.

“The Lebanese cabinet will fully assume its duties in dealing with the people’s affairs and protecting their interests,” Salam said.

On another note, PM Salam quoted Saudi officials as saying that Saudi nationals are encouraged to visit Lebanon, hoping that the country’s tourism sector will be revived.

Ahead of the cabinet session, Information Minister Ramzi Jreij said he believes Christian deputies will not attend the parliamentary legislative sessions after the end of President Michel Sleiman’s term.

He noted however that Christian MPs will continue to attend cabinet sessions.

“We, as independent Christian figures of the March 14 coalition, will decide Friday on whether we’ll participate in parliamentary and ministerial sessions amid a looming presidential vacuum,” Tourism Minister Michel Pharaon said.

In turn, Interior Minister Nouhad Mashnouq said there was no need to be concerned over the security situation in the event of power vacuum, noting that Christians are rational enough to avoid disruption at the ministerial level.
