Interior Minister says Lebanon’s security situation ‘under control’
Interior Minister Nouhad Mashnouq said on Tuesday that Lebanon’s security situation is “under control,” noting that the confusion linked to the latest two explosions proves it.

“The security situation is now a priority,” Mashnouq said following talks with Speaker Nabih Berri, noting that the two suicide attacks have failed due to the security forces’ dedication.

Speaking from Ain El-Tineh, he said he tackled the security plan with Berri, adding that the obstruction of Lebanese institutions disrupts the election of a new president.

Lebanon officially entered presidential vacuum on May 25 after the six-year term of former President Michel Sleiman expired.

Lawmakers have repeatedly failed to choose a successor to the head of state. The impasse highlights the stark political divisions in the country.

In a new wave of violence, a suicide bomber blew up his car on Monday night near an army checkpoint in southern Beirut’s Tayouneh region, killing himself and wounding several people watching the FIFA World Cup game in a nearby cafe.

The bombing came just three days after a failed attempt to kill one of the top security officials in Lebanon, which has suffered a wave of sectarian violence linked to the civil war in neighboring Syria.

On Friday the 20th of June, a suicide bomber also blew himself up at a security checkpoint in Lebanon's Daher al-Baydar in the Eastern Bekaa Valley, leaving 1 person killed, an ISF member, and up to 33 wounded.
