Sheikh Qabbani in Ramadan message: Lebanon without a president is a nation without a head

Grand Mufti Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Qabbani Said on Friday during his Ramadan sermon that the presidential vacuum in the country is an "unnatural phenomenon that should come to an end."

Sheikh Qabbani stressed the importance of electing a new president for the country, adding that Lebanon without a president means "a nation without a head."

He also said that solutions for the security chaos in the country will not be found in the absence of a president.

On Wednesday, a suicide bomber blew himself up at the Duroy hotel in Beirut's Raouche region when he detonated his explosives during a security raid. His accomplice survived the attack and is being interrogated at hospital.

Reports said they were plotting to target al-Saha Restaurant in Beirut's southern suburbs.

The attack was the third suicide bombing in Lebanon in less than a week.

Syria's civil war has spilled into Lebanon on several occasions and inflamed sectarian tensions.

A series of car bombs have struck Shiite areas in Lebanon, killing dozens of people.

Sunni militants have claimed responsibility for the attacks to avenge Hezbollah, which has sent fighters to Syria to help President Bashar Assad's troops in their battles against the rebels seeking to topple him.

Lebanon has been plunged in a presidential vacuum since the mandate of President Michel Sleiman ended in May.

Lebanese MPs failed to elect his successor after seven presidential election sessions following a boycott of the majority of March 8 camp MPs, mainly Hezbollah and the Change and Reform bloc, over an ongoing dispute over a consensual candidate.
