Lebanon's foreign ministry issues directives to expats, urges caution over Ebola virus

Lebanon's foreign ministry sent out its directives to various Lebanese missions in West African countries (Guinea, Conakry, Liberia and Sierra Leone) to provide all the needed assistance for expatriates as a precautionary measure to the outbreak of the Ebola virus.

In this regard, the ministry asked the missions to facilitate the departure procedures for the Lebanese wishing to leave the mentioned countries.

Also on Friday, Lebanon's permanent delegation in Geneva briefed the ministry on recommendations and instructions issued by the World Health Organization about the safety measures that should be adopted at border crossings and in air transportation means.

Accordingly, Lebanon's foreign ministry referred the instructions to the Ministries of Health and Public Transport.

The World Health Organization chief Margaret Chan said on Friday that West Africa's Ebola outbreak is out of control but it can be stopped.

"This outbreak is moving faster than our efforts to control it," Chan told the presidents of Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast at a meeting in Guinea's capital Conakry.

The outbreak of the virus, for which there is no known cure, began in the forests of eastern Guinea in February, but Sierra Leone now has the highest number of cases.

The haemorrhagic virus can kill up to 90 percent of those infected, though the fatality rate in this epidemic is about 60 percent. In the final stages, its symptoms include external bleeding, internal bleeding, vomiting and diarrhoea - at which point Ebola becomes highly contagious.

The jump in the number of cases and the death toll has raised international concern and placed under-resourced health facilities in the region under strain.
