EDL says power to return within upcoming hours

Electricité du Liban said Monday that power will gradually return to Lebanon within the upcoming hours, after it was cut due to damages at all power supply companies, caused by the current situation at the company.

Lebanon has been witnessing a power outage since 9:20 am across all regions.

In this regard, the committee of EDL contract workers stated that power shortages aim at exerting pressure on concerned authorities to grant employees full-time employment.

The committee also noted that it will proceed with its demonstrations until a solution pertaining to the case of contract workers is found.

In turn, the administration of Electricité du Liban issued a statement whereby it reiterated that any objection to an administrative procedure must remain within the legal and administrative means, noting that the contract workers have not complied with these rules, as they occupied the company’s headquarters and a number of its branches, a situation that has been causing negative repercussions on the energy sector.

However, the statement added that the company has been acting in accordance with the law 287, issued on April 30, 2014, concerning the skill test to be undergone by the on-demand workers and the part-time bill collectors before granting them tenure at the company.

EDL contract workers have been protesting for months calling on the government to employ them as full-time staff and to pay their salaries.

Their protests have included shutting the gates of EDL headquarters in Beirut and disrupting normal work at the state-run company.
