Member of the Future bloc MP Ahmad Fatfat said Thursday that the extension of the Parliament’s mandate is less harmful than complete vacuum, noting that the constitutional council will issue a final decision in this regard in case an appeal were filed.
In a statement to LBCI’s Nharkom Said, Fatfat said that those who have been hindering the presidential elections must be held responsible for this term extension, adding that institutional vacuum leads to disasters on a national level.
The MP stated that the civil society organizations are focusing on one cause, and overlooking other important issues such as the presidential elections.
On Wednesday, Lebanese lawmakers held a parliamentary session under the chairmanship of Speaker Nabih Berri and extended the term of the parliament until 2017 with 95 votes, and amid the boycott of the Free Patriotic Movement and Kataeb party MPs.
This as dozens of protesters waving Lebanese flags and holding signs describing Lebanese lawmakers as "thieves" gathered near Martyrs Square in downtown Beirut to denounce the extension of the parliament's mandate.
